The national capital has recorded the highest number of fake universities in the country, with 12 out of 32 unrecognised institutions operating from Delhi, according to the latest public notice issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
UGC, a statutory body under the Ministry of Education, Government of India, has warned students and parents not to seek admission in these institutions, stating that they are neither established under a Central or State Act nor recognised under the UGC Act, 1956. Consequently, they are not authorised to award valid degrees.
The 12 institutions flagged in Delhi include World Peace of United Nations University, Institute of Management and Engineering, All India Institute of Public & Physical Health Sciences (AIIPHS), Commercial University Ltd, United Nations University, Vocational University, ADR Centric Juridical University, Indian Institute of Science and Engineering, Viswakarma Open University for Self Employment, Adhyatmik Vishwavidyalaya (Spiritual University), National Institute of Management Solution and Mountain Institute of Management & Technology.
The commission noted that several of these entities use names resembling reputed national or international bodies, which may mislead students into believing they are legitimate. It clarified that only universities established by an Act of Parliament or a State Legislature, or those declared as “deemed to be universities” under Section 3 of the UGC Act, are legally permitted to award degrees. Institutions not recognised under Sections 2(f) and 3 cannot confer valid qualifications.
Across India, 32 institutions have been declared fake. After Delhi’s 12 entries, Uttar Pradesh accounts for four such institutions, while Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Puducherry and West Bengal have two each. Arunachal Pradesh, Haryana, Jharkhand and Rajasthan have one each.
The UGC stressed that degrees awarded by these fake universities will not be recognised for higher education, government employment or any official purpose. With admissions underway for various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, students in Delhi have been urged to verify the recognition status of institutions on the official UGC website before applying.
